Orthodontics

Orthodontic braces are offered as a treatment for straightening teeth, commonly for young children aged between 7-14 years. Metal wires are attached to the front surfaces of the teeth and gradually tightened over time, applying gentle pressure to the teeth and encouraging them to adjust into a straighter position.

The time the braces need to be in place for depends on how much straightening of the teeth is needed; our team will discuss this in full once the initial examination has been done.

How Are Dental Braces Fitted?

The first consultation will involve assessing how much movement of the teeth is required, using X-rays, moulds, and impressions of the teeth. The brace fitting procedure will take place as follows;
  • An etchant is applied to the teeth to be braced to help the cement stick to the tooth surface
  • A bracket is applied onto a tooth using dental grade cement, which is then hardened
  • An arch-wire is threaded between the brackets and attached with coloured elastic or metal bands to help close open bites, shift the midline, or pull teeth or jaws strongly in the desired direction
After the dental brace has been fitted it may feel uncomfortable and slightly sore following the initial procedure; this is common and any discomfort will disappear within 1-2 weeks. Some discomfort may also be felt when the adjustments are made to tighten the brace; however our highly experienced dental team will aim to put you at ease, and we can ensure that the final results will be worth it!

How To Look After Your Teeth After Braces Have Been Removed

You will need to wear a retainer once the braces are removed to ensure teeth stay in their new, straightened position. This allows time for bone and gums to stabilise around the teeth.

How long you will need to wear the retainers for is individual to each patient; however, unlike braces, they can be moved in and out of the mouth as required.
